The Weather

Well, we are two weeks into the season. It's been a nice mild year across the nation and mares never really shut down this year. El Nino, who knows? Watch for weather changes to effect the cycling of your mares. This could be a very  difficult year because horses are polyestrus. Polyestrus means that they cycle on a seasonal basis. Their systems need to shut down for a period in order to function properly. When this does not occur, you'll have mares hanging on to  follicles and induction hormones do not work very well. Yes, you get the odd mare that will cruise right on through without missing a beat, but across the board most mares will be tough to get bred, "Until the grass is green and leaves are on the trees" as my mentor Mr. Carter Duer always told me!
